10 of the Best Kayaking Spots Around LA

In celebration of the first day of summer (June 20th if you’re wondering - she’s a Gemini), we’ve compiled a list of the best spots for kayaking in and around LA. Beat the heat this summer with this beginner-friendly arm-day activity.
Frolic with sea lions
Location: Marina del Rey
Rent a single or tandem kayak, or join a tour with Pro SUP Shop to enjoy the harbor views. This area is known for its playful sea lions, so keep your eyes peeled and your inner child alert! If you’re more of a stand-up paddleboard (SUP) person, Pro SUP Shop also offers sunrise and sunset tours, as well as SUP lessons.
Tour the LA river
Location: Frog Town
If you thought the LA River was just a trickle of water in a concrete ditch you’d be wrong (except where it is actually that). The LA River actually has a lot to offer, which you can explore on a tour with LA River Kayak Safari. You’ll find mild rapids, wildlife, and scenic vegetation all in the heart of Los Angeles. Just make sure to book during their open season, May 30 - September 30.
Go people watching
Location: Venice
There’s a reason the Venice Canals aren’t full of kayak traffic, and it’s that commercial rentals aren’t permitted in the neighborhood. So, this spot is only for the committed kayaker - you can launch your own kayak or canoe from the Venice Blvd launch ramp at 501 N Venice Blvd. and enjoy the canals - and the people meandering through them - from there.
Marvel at the mountains
Location: Pyramid Lake
Meditate on the serene views of mountains reflected on the water as you glide across Pyramid Lake. You can rent a kayak, canoe, or paddleboard by the hour at Vaquero Beach from Rocky Mountain Rec. Just make sure to arrive early for the calmest water and note that all rentals are due back by 3pm.
Imagine you’re in Italy
Location: Alamitos Bay, Long Beach
There’s something for everyone at Alamitos Bay. The water is calm thanks to the sand-split peninsula and breakwater, which is great for beginner kayakers. Plus, the bay is home to Naples Island, which has a canal running through it reminiscent of Italy and excellent for Zillow fans. For the wildlife lovers, don’t miss the stingless moon jellies that thrive here in the summer! They’re typically found at the end of Spinnaker Canal. Snag a rental at Kayaks on the Water and enjoy!
Get in touch with your wild side
Location: Santa Cruz Island, Channel Islands
The Channel Islands, off the coast of Santa Barbara, offer tons of outdoor activities and exploration, and happen to have some of the best kayaking around. From Scorpion Anchorage, visit sea caves and coves in crystal clear water. Or, from Prisoner’s Harbor, see marine life up close in the sheltered coves. You can bring your own kayak, rent a kayak, or join a tour - just make sure you follow all the national park and ferry regulations, and make your reservations in advance!
Picnic and paddle
Location: Castaic Lake, Castaic
This state recreation center is exactly what you’d expect - boating, swimming, fishing, and picnicking. This is the place for a chill day on the water with a beach picnic, and maybe a swim. Rent an inflatable kayak or paddleboard from Cruise Castaic at the Castaic Lagoon Launch Ramp or bring your own (permit required).
Live the island life
Location: Catalina Island
What’s not to love about Catalina Island? For those who prefer to stay in Avalon, the main hub, rent a kayak or join a tour with Descanso Beach Ocean Sports. The more adventurous types may be more interested in heading over to Two Harbors for excellent views, beautiful coves, and thriving marine life. Check out Two Harbors Dive & Recreation Center, which offers kayak rentals for part of the day or overnight for campers.
Visit leopard sharks
Location: Terranea Cove, Palos Verdes
Terranea Cove is a small, rocky beach accessible by trail from Terranea Resort. You can join several different guided kayak tours from the resort (no resort stay necessary) with Palos Verdes Ocean Sports, including their most intriguing tour to a leopard shark nursery in a kelp forest. Glide overhead as you catch glimpses of the sharks and other marine life below.
Cool off in a sea cave
Location: La Jolla
Known as one of the best locations for kayaking in California, we just had to include La Jolla on this list! Enjoy several sea caves and wildly diverse marine life in the ecological reserve including sea lions, leopard sharks, whales, and dolphins. Rent a kayak or take a tour with Everyday California. Just note that the caves are off-limits except for tours.
