Although originally founded in 1917 as a white and Christian-only town (un oh!), Culver City has since diversified to a population that is less than half white. Thanks in large part to the movie studios that moved in from the ‘60s to present day, the city now has a reputation for its arts and culture scene. Come with us to explore it!
Getting There
- Metro: Take the Metro E (gold) line to the Culver City Stop.
- Driving: Park in the garage at 3844 Watseka Ave for the $12 daily max. Just make sure to exit before closing hours (1:00-3:00am depending on the day).
Morning
- 10:00am: If you’ve never been to a Mexican restaurant for breakfast, it’s time. Start today at family-owned Rubio’s Cafe. Although technically outside the bounds of Culver City, the huevos rancheros and breakfast croissants are worth the diversion.
- 10:45am: Head down Robertson and turn left onto Washington on a 9-minute walk to Platform, a chic shopping center featuring clothing, furniture, and more.
- 11:45am: Walk a few blocks to Downtown Culver City for some meandering. We recommend stops at The Ripped Bodice romance bookstore, Milla Chocolates, and Lundeen’s gift shop.
Afternoon
- 12:45pm: For a pick-me-up, head over to The Conservatory for Coffee, Tea & Cocoa for a cuppa joe made with beans roasted in-house, then pass by the Hobbit House, which is exactly what it sounds like, on your way back to Downtown. Please be mindful that it’s in use and try not to disturb the residents.
- 1:30pm: Head to Emerald Thai Cuisine for Lunch. Try one of their specialties including Chicken Cashew Nut, Emerald Spicy BBQ Chicken, Chili Chicken, Chicken Garlic & more.
- 2:15pm: Pop across Venice Blvd to visit the Museum of Jurassic Technology ($15), which blends fact and fiction for a befuddling but fascinating collection.
- 3:15pm: Rent a bike at the Metro Bike Share right outside the museum at the corner of Bagley and Venice. If you don’t have a pass already, we recommend the 1-ride pass for today ($14 for 4 hours). Bike 8 minutes Southwest to the Wende Museum to learn about Cold War era history and see some very cool artifacts.
- 5:00pm: Bike 4 minutes to cocktail hour at Blind Barber, one of the better known speakeasies in town. And yes, you can actually get a haircut here if you prefer that to a cocktail.
Evening
- 6:00pm: Bike 8 minutes over to Jackson Market & Deli for dinner. We hope you’ve biked up an appetite! Enjoy the stellar sandwiches and casual atmosphere.
- 6:45pm: Return your bike 5 minutes away at the corner of Venice & Hughes. Walk 2 blocks Southeast on Hughes to Village Well Books & Coffee. Hang out and peruse the shelves until show time.
- 7:30: Show time at Kirk Douglas Theater across the street! If you prefer your entertainment on screen, catch a movie at The Culver Theater 3 blocks North.
- 9:30pm: Debrief over a flight of wines at Stanley’s Wet Goods wine bar and market. If a cocktail bar is more your vibe, check out The Lounge at Ugo.
Tips
- Total times with bike rental: 1h 27m + 24m biking
- Total walk time without bike rental: 2h 28m
- This itinerary can be done Friday - Sunday, or add on Wednesday and Thursday if you decide not to go to The Wende.
- The Museum of Jurassic Technology offers timed ticket entry, so we recommend purchasing a ticket in advance.
- If you happen to go to the Wende earlier than this itinerary suggests, stop for a sweet treat at Baked Bar nearby, which closes at 3pm. Or, if you visit Culver City during M-F business hours, catch a studio tour at Sony Pictures.
