Beach Volleyball Rules
This is a social beach volleyball league designed for beginner to intermediate players. Expect a mix of fun, friendly competition, and good vibes. If you are highly advanced and looking for intense play, this may not be the right fit.
Summary of Volleyball Rules
The important stuff you should know
- 4v4 format (co-ed encouraged)
- Games are played in 50-minute match slots
- Matches are best of 3 games
- Games played to 21, win by 2, cap at 23
- Rally scoring means every play earns a point. Win the rally, get the point, and serve next
- Minimum 4 players to start (or 3 if short, see below)
- Show up early, stay the whole time, and be a good sport
- This league is about having fun, meeting people, and getting a little competitive without taking things too seriously.
- We welcome all players. Respect for each other is non-negotiable. No harassment, no discrimination, no weird behavior. If something crosses the line, we'll step in.
- This is social first. Winning is great, but the goal is to leave with more friends than you came with.
- Teams are responsible for the behavior of their guests and supporters on the sidelines.
- All players must sign a waiver before being eligible to play (we will provide this when you arrive)
- Playoff eligibility requires being on the roster from Week 1 and having a signed waiver on file.
- Teams with 2 or more forfeits are not eligible for playoffs.
- Game time is start time. Teams without enough players forfeit 1 game after 5 minutes and the match after 15 minutes.
- We recommend arriving 10 to 15 minutes early to warm up and avoid forfeits.
A few other important notes
- Standings: Based on win-loss record. Match points are used as a tiebreaker. Win in 2 games: +2 points. Win in 3 games: +1 point. Loss in 3 games: -1 point. Loss in 2 games: -2 points.
- Tiebreakers: Ties are broken first by total match points, then point differential (points scored minus points allowed), then head-to-head result.
- Playoffs: Top teams advance. Single elimination. Best 2 of 3. Same scoring rules as the regular season. No outside players allowed in playoff games.
- Court Awareness: Stay on your court. Do not run into another game in progress. If a ball from another court rolls into your game and affects play, replay the point.
- Substitutes: Subs must be approved by the commissioner ahead of time. Each sub can only play one game per season. If you only have 3 rostered players and no subs, you can still play without penalty.
- Timeouts: Each team gets one 1-minute timeout per game. Use it wisely.
- Third Game: If time is tight, the third game may be played to 15 points instead of 21. The commissioner will call this if needed.
- Sides: Teams switch sides at 11 points in each game. In a third game played to 15, teams switch at 8 points.
Deep Dive of the Rules
For topics that may require more clarity
CONDUCT AND SPORTSMANSHIP
- Any individual who by misconduct (profanity, physical or verbal abuse toward players or others) causes themselves to be removed from a game is automatically ineligible to participate for the remainder of that game, any other games that day, and one full week. That person may also be disqualified for future games and seasons.
- Calls made by the commissioner or on-court agreement shall not be excessively contested.
- No Heckling or Aggressive Behavior: Players may not heckle, taunt, or behave aggressively toward opponents or other participants. Players can be suspended for unsportsmanlike conduct during their games or while watching other teams play. Good-natured banter is fine, hostility is not.
- Supporter Conduct: Each team is responsible for the behavior of their supporters. If guests on the sidelines become unruly or disruptive, they will be asked to leave. Continued issues may result in penalties for the team.
GAME FORMAT AND BASICS
- 4 players on the court at a time
- We play co-ed with a max of 3 men on the court
- If your team is short on women that day, you can still play, but you'll play with 3
- Teams are encouraged to have 6 to 8 players so you have flexibility week to week
- Rock paper scissors decides serve or side before games 1 and 3
GAME DURATION AND SCORING
- Matches last 50 minutes
- Each match is best of 3 games
- Games are played to 21 points
- Win by 2, cap at 23. If time is tight, the 3rd game may be played to 15 points
ROTATION AND SUBSTITUTIONS
- Teams rotate after every side out (when your team wins the point and gets the serve)
- You can choose one system per game: Player-for-player (pair up with one teammate, only sub in for each other, swap as often as you want) or Rotating in (substitutes rotate into one position, usually server, keep the same order all game, don't skip people unless needed for the gender rule)unless team captains want to continue the game.
FORFEIT AND PUNCTUALITY
- If you only have 3 rostered players and no subs, you can still play without penalty
- You are allowed to find a sub to reach 4 players for the night
- Subs must be approved by the commissioner ahead of time
- Each sub can only play one game per season
- People showed up to play with you. Don't leave them hanging.
SERVING
- If the serve hits the net and goes over, it's in play
- Don't step on or over the line before you hit the ball
- You can serve from anywhere behind the end line
- If you step on the line, it's a fault and the other team gets the point and serve next
SERVE RECEIVE
- You can receive the serve with a bump, hands together, a closed fist, or an open-hand set.
- You cannot attack the serve above the net.
- You cannot block the serve.
- Each team is allowed a maximum of three contacts before sending the ball over the net.
- A player may not contact the ball twice in succession, except on the first touch where a double contact is okay if it is one continuous motion.
- A player may not hit the ball twice in succession except on the first contact of the team's possession, where a block touch does not count.
- Outfielders cannot play in the infield, but infielders can play in the outfield.
- If a runner advances on an overthrow, that runner only gets one base. However, Runners will NOT automatically get a base on an overthrow if they choose not to advance on the next base.
- There can only be 5 players in the infield when the ball is kicked by an opposing team. This includes the pitcher but NOT the catcher.
HITTING AND CONTACT
- You can use any part of your body
- The serve must be hit with your arm
- Clean contact only. No lifting or guiding the ball
- Do not touch the net
- If the ball sticks or rolls on your hands, it's a carry
BLOCKING
- Does not count as one of your team's three touches
- You can reach over the net as long as you are not interfering with the play
- A player may follow up a block with the next contact, and that contact counts as the first of the team's three touches.
SELF-OFFICIATING
- All games are self-refereed. Players are responsible for making their own calls honestly.
- The team on the side of the ball makes the call on close plays.
- If a play is genuinely too close to call, replay the point. Do not debate it for more than a few seconds.
- If there is a disagreement, talk it out quickly and respectfully. If you cannot agree, replay the point and keep it moving.
- Keep it fair, keep it fun, and keep it moving.
